After 31 years on the job, my dad is being forced to retire due to his age. Today is his last day as an Air Traffic Controller. He’s going to start a new job as an instructor on an ATC Simulator, but I know he’ll miss controlling real planes! I know I’m gonna miss going to the airport with him!! Good Luck Dad, and Congrats! It’s been awhile Tumblr!

I’m finally getting to sleep in late for the first time in three weeks! Between school, work, the fire department and the hurricane, I’ve just been so tired and busy. I finally have time to just relax and listen to music. Everything with the hurricane was just completely crazy and actually heartbreaking. On Sunday night, before the storm, I went to the firehouse to go on standby. We had a couple calls that night, but nothing bad. Then Monday night came and so did Hurricane Sandy. That’s when things got crazy. We were non-stop going on calls. I was assigned to one of the ambulances. We mostly drove around to pick up people that finally decided to escape their flooded homes. It was all an eye-opening experience. I never knew that anything like that would ever hit so close to home.
I was on standby with the FD for 63 hours straight. Through all of that, I learned the meaning of Brotherhood. I saw it firsthand in all the efforts of every member of the FD. I am proud to be part of something that helps people in whatever way possible.
In the days after the storm I wanted to do anything I could do to help the people that were hit hard by the hurricane. One day I went with a standby crew from Summit NY and three other FD members. We went up and down streets pumping out people’s flooded basements. Everyone was so happy and grateful. It felt great to help these people. Later on in the week I went with three other members to go help The Red Cross. We got food and water and headed down the the south-most part of Seaford. We drove up and down the streets handing out the food and water to the people who needed it. Honestly, it was pretty devastating. So many people lost so much that they owned. The streets were lined with flooded furniture and bags of what is now garbage. People’s possessions were just destroyed. People’s lives were ruined.
The best feeling in the world was helping those people. Even though they were dealing with these losses, they all greeted us with warm hearts and they were constantly thanking us. Everyone complimented us that we were doing a great job and that we were really helpful. It was putting a warm smile on those people’s faces that was the best feeling.
I have learned that goodness in people’s hearts come out when others are in need. I’m glad that I was a part of helping these people put their lives back together, even if it was just a small favor like handing out food to them. The people told me that just seeing the FD and firefighters gave them hope. I wish the best of luck to all those effected by Hurricane Sandy. Those parts effected will be rebuilt. And it will be stronger than ever. Strong Island 2012.
